KNOWN ONCE: STORIES + DANCE
LISS FAIN DANCE IS WORKING WITH 826 VALENCIA & THE REDWOODS
ON A NEW EVENING-LENGTH DANCE INSTALLATION PIECE
WITH PERSONAL STORIES FROM YOUNG PEOPLE & SENIORS
This fall, Liss Fain Dance launches Known Once, a project that combines storytelling and dance in a more personal and direct way than we ever have before. For Known Once, we are partnering with 826 Valencia, a San Francisco organization that supports writing and literacy in young people, and The Redwoods, a mixed-income residential community for seniors in Mill Valley.
Known Once builds on personal stories of change from people of three age groups—students ages 10-14, seniors, and the LFD company dancers. Liss Fain and the company dancers will work closely with students at 826 Valencia and seniors at The Redwoods to develop stories and movement in intensive workshop sessions during the fall of 2016. The company will then take the stories and movement into the studio and start weaving them into highly physical, emotionally resonant choreography.
After six years of creating dance performance installations inspired by literature and poetry, Known Once will be our first project to draw on the words, movement, and experiences of people we work with. These real life stories will shape the choreography, design, and musical score for a large-scale performance installation that will premiere May 18-21, 2017 at Z Space in San Francisco. We are excited and honored to be bringing these stories to the stage with us.
The LFD dancers and the seniors will present a work-in-progress performance at the Redwoods on November 3, 2016. The LFD dancers and the students will present a work-in-progress performance at 826 Valencia's Tenderloin Center on November 5, 2016. These performances will be free and open to the public.
During the spring of 2017, Liss and the LFD dancers will develop the material created in the fall into the choreography and staging of an evening-length, large-scale performance installation. Composer Dan Wool will incorporate the recorded and edited stories into an original musical score and designer Matthew Antaky will create an installation set of tangentially connected rooms that gives each audience member an individual experience of the stories’ events and emotions. The students and seniors will see their stories and movement transformed into a performance that encompasses the dancers and the audience in a shared world. Known Once will premiere at Z Space in San Francisco May 18-21, 2017.
Liss Fain on working with students at 826 Valencia:
“I love the students’ excitement when they see how their movement and stories enrich each other. It’s wonderful for me to witness their thoughtfulness in choosing movement for their words, their exuberance in performing, and their care when teaching what they have done to the other students. The energy and concentration in the room is infectious.”
