Artist StatementBiography

My work is abstract, defined by dynamic and emotionally poignant movement that fuses modern dance's flow and experimentation with ballet's precision and lift. The ideas that I work from have their origins in classical music—from America, Europe and Africa—as well as in literature. Over the past few years, I have focused on the tensions and profound spiritual understanding engendered by the unpredictable course of events that comprise one's life.

When I create the movement and the overall structure of a piece, I work from an internal story which shapes the trajectory of the dance. In the rehearsal process, the dancers and I work collaboratively with the movement phrases and the ideas to explore possibilities, define clarity and accentuate individuality. To create a performance that is visceral, emotional and thought-provoking, I conceive of the movement, the music and the visual environment as an indivisible unit.
