Tour Summary
Building on two previous tours of Europe, Liss Fain Dance has recently returned from a four city tour of Poland where Liss Fain's new dance Looking, Looking premiered at a command performance for the U.S. Ambassador in Warsaw.
First stop was the Silesian Dance Festival ( Bytom), the largest dance festival in Poland where top-tier companies from all around the world have been performing by invitation for the last fifteen years.
Nestled in the Sudety Mountain valley, the second town on the tour, Ladek Zdroj, is famous both for its International Dance Festival and its healing mineral baths; as the dancers rested from a long travel day; they headed for the mineral rich water s of the city’s spa which, since the 16th century, has been frequented by such renowned individuals as the German poet Goethe, German Emperor Wilhelm III and a Russian Tsar. Renewed, they went on to perform before a sold-out audience on the outdoor stage, the mountains backlit by the setting sun.
Third stop was the Contemporary Dance Forum in Lublin, “one of the most important contemporary dance festivals in Eastern Europe,” where the company taught two days of master classes to local students, ending with an evening performance at the filled-to-capacity amphitheater.
The tour finished up in Warsaw with a concert sponsored by the US Embassy. The rough and tumble quarters typical of the rest of the tour were here, courtesy of the Embassy, replaced with rooms at the Inter Continental Hotel. Minutes before the performance at Warsaw's Royal Lazienki Park began, dark clouds massed over the park turned into a drenching thunderstorm that soaked the open-air stage. “When the rain stopped, several members of the audience stepped forward to say that they would help dry the stage if the dancers would still perform. In the end, members of the audience joined representatives of the Embassy, Liss Fain Dance, the Warsaw Ballet School, and Royal Lazienki Park in mopping the stage.” ( U.S. Embassy, Warsaw)
