ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
LFD's Fall Intensive Workshop will give dancers the opportunity to work alongside artistic director Liss Fain and the LFD company dancers to explore the ideas and process of the company's next premiere, The Words, which will have its first performances in early 2018. For The Words, the company is working with personal letters from the past to create a work that explores intimacy, solitude, and connection. The piece will be performed with the audience surrounding the dancers and will invite audience members to write their own letters to become part of the performance. During the workshop, we will explore the development of choreography and improvisation connected to personally meaningful texts, and how performers can connect and interact across distance in an installation environment. Dancers will share in the highly collaborative and physically exacting process that underpins LFD's performance work.
This workshop is structured like a company rehearsal, where dancers work with underlying concepts and stories to create movement from prompts, individualize movement phrases, and incorporate the range of perspectives that affect the performance of installation works. Advanced, professional and pre-professional dancers interested in the company’s work, which fuses contemporary force with the kinetic precision of ballet and is developed through a highly collaborative process, are encouraged to apply.

Liss Fain Dance has two ongoing education programs that connect the company with both young people and advanced dancers. The company's outreach program, developed in partnership with 826 Valencia, provides opportunities for students from a broad spectrum of communities to combine dance and movement with creative writing. LFD has also partnered with Breakthrough San Francisco for a semester-long series of outreach workshops. For advanced and professional dancers, LFD's intensive workshops immerse participants in an intimate experience of the company's creative process for developing installation work.
